Discover why UK’s Prince William doesn’t wear a wedding ring and the unique details behind Kate Middleton’s engagement and wedding rings

When the UK’s Prince William and Kate Middleton exchanged wedding vows in 2011, the world watched as the future Princess received a ring crafted from the famous Welsh gold. Frequently papped in the UK and abroad, Kate wears the gold band alongside her sapphire and diamond engagement ring. However, observers of the British Royal Family have noted the absence of any ring on Prince William’s left ring finger.

The truth is that Prince William doesn’t wear a wedding ring because he was never bestowed one, according to the American website Bridesdotcom. A month before the royal wedding, St. James Palace officially announced that William would forego the tradition of receiving a wedding ring during the ceremony. According to insiders cited by the website, the decision was a matter of personal style – Prince William has never been inclined towards jewellery, and he opted to continue that trend into his marriage.

Royal commentator Eloise Parker shed more light on this choice in 2018. It’s not a longstanding tradition for royal men to wear wedding rings. She pointed out that notable figures like Prince Philip and Prince William align with this practice, emphasising that when a wedding is witnessed by millions globally, the knowledge of marital status becomes widely apparent, making a ring less essential.

Kate Middleton’s wedding band was reportedly designed in collaboration with the Bristol jewellery company Wartski. The Welsh gold used for the ring was a gift from the late Queen Elizabeth II, presented during their engagement. Kate’s engagement ring, a diamond and sapphire dazzler, is an iconic piece with royal history. “It’s my mother’s (Princess Diana) engagement ring, so I thought it was quite nice because, obviously, she’s not going to be around to share in any of the fun and excitement of all this. This is my way of keeping her sort of close to it all,” said Prince William in an ITV News interview.

In contrast, his younger brother, Prince Harry, does wear a wedding ring. Meghan Markle presented Harry with a platinum band during their vows in May 2018. Meghan herself received a special band made of Welsh gold, a customary choice for royal brides. This unique tradition, according to the British tabloid Mirror, is something Meghan pairs with her three-stone diamond engagement ring.
