Veteran actor Ranjeet is known for his portraying negative roles in Hindi cinema. He is considered as one of the iconic villains of Bollywood. While Ranjeet received a lot of appreciation for his acting skills in his career spanning over 5 decades, the actor has often been misunderstood for his negative onscreen image.
In his recent interview with Radio Nasha, Ranjeet opened up about an incident when his family didn’t approve of his career choices and threw him out of the house after watching him assault Rakhee‘s character in their 1971 film Sharmeelee.
Recalling the story, Ranjeet said that his family walked out of the theatre after watching the scene and later asked him to leave the house. “My mother said, ‘How dare you enter this house? You tear women’s clothes, what kind of work is this?’ She told me to get out of the house,” he said.
His mother started crying after looking at Rakhee. She said, ‘Satyanash ho mera putar da. Mein maafi mangti hu tujhse (To hell with my son. I apologise to you).’ Rakhee then made her understand that they are good friends and then Ranjeet’s parents accepted it.

In the same interview, Ranjeet also revealed that he left the iconic role of Gabbar Singh in Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay to honour his friendship with Danny Denzongpa. He was shooting for another film in Bangalore and Danny was in Afghanistan shooting for Feroz Khan’s Dharmatma where he had a special song in Hema Malini.
In those days, the schedules of actors were not fixed, communication was also difficult. That time, Feroz Khan told Danny, ‘What will you do in Sholay? There are three main actors in the film – Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjeev Kumar – you will be in the 4th or 5th role. I am giving you a song with Hema Malini in this film.’

Danny couldn’t say no to Sholay and felt responsible that he should continue with Dharmatma as the shooting of Sholay had not begun. Then the production house of Sholay came to Ranjeet and offered him the role of Gabbar Singh.
Since Ranjeet and Danny had worked in a few films by that time. So Ranjeet told them, “Danny ka ghar mein aana jana hai (Danny comes to my house) so I won’t be able to do this film because he is my friend. I saw a picture that said that Danny is caught up in Afghanistan and I took the film away from him. So, I asked them that if Danny says, ‘I don’t want to do this film, give it to somebody else,’ then I don’t mind. At least I should have a talk with him, and if he agrees, then I will do the film. But they could not wait because the film involved so many big stars. So, this role was destined for Amjad Khan.”
