Lee Sun-kyun, the South Korean actor renowned for his role in the Oscar-winning film ‘Parasite’, was discovered dead, Yonhap news agency reported on Wednesday. The news comes amid an ongoing government crackdown on illegal drugs, with Lee having been under investigation for alleged drug use.
According to Yonhap, Lee was found unconscious next to briquettes inside a car at a park in Seoul on Wednesday morning. The discovery followed a report from Lee’s wife to the police, stating that he had left home, accompanied by what appeared to be a suicide note.
South Korea, known for its stringent drug laws, imposes severe penalties for drug-related offences. Offenders can face a minimum of six months in prison, escalating to up to 14 years for repeat offences and individuals involved in drug dealing.
Born in 1975, Lee Sun-kyun gained international acclaim for his portrayal of a wealthy family’s father in the critically acclaimed “Parasite.” His notable contributions to South Korean cinema include leading roles in films such as the 2012 thriller “Helpless” and the 2014 hit “All About My Wife.”
Notably, Lee took on the lead role in Apple TV+’s inaugural Korean-language original series, “Dr. Brain,” which premiered in 2021. The six-episode sci-fi thriller revolves around Koh Se-won, a stoic neurologist exploring the mysteries surrounding a family accident through daring brain experiments.
