KOLKATA: Jadavpur University was plunged into chaos Saturday evening on the eve of a convocation following Bengal governor CV Ananda Bose‘s decision to remove officiating vice-chancellor Buddhadeb Sau.
A defiant VC indicated the move was unlawful and declared he would go ahead with the convocation, over which he and Bose had been at loggerheads for a while. The tussle raged against the backdrop of a tug-of-war between Bose and the TMC government over control of top university appointments. The governor is the chancellor of all state universities.
Over 5,000 students are to be awarded degrees at Sunday’s convocation, JU’s 66th. Bose’s decision – conveyed through a terse announcement – caught everyone off guard and came in the wake of JU’s decision to go ahead with the convocation without the governor’s nod.
State education minister Bratya Basu accused the governor of being “hell bent on destroying the higher education ambience in the state”.
Sources said Basu’s department has asked Sau not to accept the letter from Raj Bhavan.
