Lalan junks JD(U) rift buzz, attends meet with Nitish – Times of India

PATNA: Nitish Kumar and JD(U) national president Rajiv Ranjan alias Lalan Singh attended Thursday a meeting of the party’s national office-bearers in Delhi amid speculation about a rift and that the latter may quit the post to make way for the Bihar CM.
Lalan dismissed resignation rumours and alleged the “narrative” was set at “BJP’s behest” ahead of the national executive and council meetings of JD(U) slated for Friday.
“If I have to resign, I will call you (media) and consult you about what to write in the resignation letter so that you can go to the BJP office and get the draft?” Lalan quipped, asserting that “JD(U) is one and will remain united”.
The speculation in Bihar was that Lalan may be asked to resign due to his alleged political proximity to its governing ally, Lalu Prasad’s RJD.
JD(U) chief spokesperson KC Tyagi, too, refuted the rumours. “Lalan, Nitish and I have been together for many decades. Why would Lalan resign? I am going to meet Nitish. Does it mean I will resign?” Tyagi said after the JD(U) office-bearers’ meeting.
Before the meeting, Lalan called on Nitish at the latter’s residence in the national capital and the two arrived at the JD(U) office together, a gesture apparently aimed at sending out a message of unity within the party.
Before leaving Patna for Delhi earlier in the day, Nitish asserted that the JD(U)’s two-day conclave in Delhi was a “normal and annual” affair with “nothing extraordinary” about it, rejecting speculation about fissures in his party.
“These meetings take place every year. It is normal…there is nothing specific at all. These are routine meetings,” said the CM when asked about rumours that major changes in JD(U) were in the offing at the meetings.
