Back in the spotlight, Kareena Kapoor Khan showcased a fresh style, dressed in a head-to-toe ensemble by Harsh Harsh. The actress wore a tie-up jacket and a palazzo that resembled the style of culottes. Is the culotte trend making a comeback? Taking a look at its history, the pants resembling a skirt, known as culottes, gained popularity around the 1930s. Norman Norell, a discreet yet influential designer, reintroduced culottes in a 1960 show. In the 80s and 90s, culottes became a fashion staple, gracing the runways of major houses like Ralph Lauren and Bruce Oldfield. Khan’s ensemble takes us back to the time where Princess Diana wore Bruce Oldfield’s velvet culotte suit to turn on the Christmas lights on Regent Street in 1981.

In line with the prevailing red trend, Khan opted for a lapel-collared tie-up jacket, reminiscent of a kimono style. Complementing this choice, she paired it with a greige palazzo, introducing a contrast in both colour and silhouette. The jacket provided a cinched structure, while the bottoms offered a flowy, anti-silhouette fit. The bow tie-up detail taps into the prevailing trend of the year—bows. Bows have made frequent appearances in various forms, ranging from oversized accents to hair clips and decorative elements. The ballet-core aesthetic has been prominently featured, and Khan’s ensemble checks the spot.

Kareena Kapoor Khan maintained a cohesive minimalistic approach in her makeup, hair, and accessories. The “less is more” aesthetic, aiming for quiet luxury, was evident in the subtle yet impactful styling of each element. Her hair, in a slightly tousled bun with a middle part, complemented the light smokey eyes and nude lips, achieving a natural look. As for accessories, she opted for just a pair of dangling diamond-encrusted earrings, emphasising simplicity.

Turning the focus back to her bottoms, culottes made a prominent appearance on the runways of Off-White, Christian Dior, Acne Studios, and other notable shows. Celebrities including Olivia Palermo, model Christy Turlington, and French actress Marion Cotillard have recently propogated the trend of these skirt-like pants. Given the revival of numerous ’80s-’90s trends and vintage pieces, the comeback of culottes doesn’t seem far-fetched.
