Gujarat high court refuses to give Oreva MD regular bail in Morbi tragedy | India News – Times of India

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat high court on Tuesday denied regular bail to Jaysukh Patel, the MD of Oreva Group, in connection with the Morbi suspension bridge collapse on October 30, 2022, which killed 135 persons, including 65 children.
Justice D A Joshi dismissed Patel’s bail plea with the observation that being the head of the company that was assigned the management of the bridge by the Morbi municipality, Patel was aware of its dilapidated condition, and had he taken steps for proper renovation of the bridge, the tragedy could have been averted.
The judge said he was not inclined to entertain the bail application at this juncture, considering that the applicant had sufficient knowledge (about the condition of the suspension bridge) right from the beginning, apart from the fact that the victims’ applications for further investigation and addition of sections were pending before the sessions court.
Patel has been behind bars ever since he surrendered on January 31 after a chargesheet was filed against 10 people for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, along with other charges.
