NEW DELHI: Delhi Police‘s special cell Tuesday moved an application before a city court seeking three-month extension of time to complete its investigation in the case lodged against NewsClick under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Additional sessions judge Hardeep Kaur posted the matter for hearing on December 22. The application sought an extension up to the maximum period permissible under the law, i.e., 180 days from the day of arrest of an accused, as mandated by special Acts, including UAPA.Without the court’s approval, theprobe agency has to complete the probe within 90 days, or else the accused in custody gets the statutory right to bail.
The special cell had arrested NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha and HR head Anil Chakraborty on October 3 on the charge of illegally receiving foreign donations to spread pro-China propaganda.
In its application before the court, the police said the documents and other evidence in the case were voluminous and the sleuths had to visit several places outside Delhi as part of the probe. Besides, the probe agency required judicial orders for the questioning of some persons/potential witnesses. Because of these factors, the investigation was taking time, the police said.
