NEW DELHI: In a fresh setback for troubled edtech startup Byju’s, Code.org, a US-based non-profit organisation and educational website has sued Byju’s subsidiary WhiteHat Jr in a California district court over payment dues. The case was filed on December 1, the court’s website showed.
Byju’s had acquired WhiteHat Jr in a $300 million deal in 2020. It is understood that WhiteHat Jr had reached an agreement with Code.org to pay $4 million over four years to licence its (Code.org’s) coding education platform. However, WhiteHat Jr did not honour the payment schedule. In 2021, WhiteHat Jr had signed an agreement with Code.org as it looked to augment its coding course. Byju’s did not comment on the story. Earlier this year, Ananya Tripathi, the CEO of WhiteHat Jr had quit the firm, amid a series of high-level exits.
Byju’s has been mired in a series of crises, including a long-drawn dispute with its lenders, over repayment of a $1.2 billion term loan B and scrutiny of regulators, following the abrupt resignation of its former auditor Deloitte and three of the firm’s board members in June.
