Ask Centre to release flood relief funds for Tamil Nadu: PIL in HC | India News – Times of India

MADURAI: A lawyer approached the Madras high court on Thursday, seeking a directive to the Centre for immediate release of funds from the NDRF, to facilitate relief work in the four flood-affected southern districts of Tamil Nadu. A division bench comprising justices P Velmurugan and N Senthilkumar directed the Centre and the state to submit counter affidavits within a week.
The PIL, filed by C Anand Raj from Madurai district, highlighted that Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari districts experienced unprecedented heavy rainfall in December, leading to flooding in several residential areas due to water discharge from dams and the breach of irrigation tanks.
This resulted in extensive damage to public roads, bridges, houses and other properties, besides severely impacting the livelihoods of farmers, fishermen and saltpan workers.
The financial losses incurred by people and the infrastructural damage in the four districts were likely to take a considerable amount of time to recover, the PIL said.
The petitioner stated that CM M K Stalin had submitted a representation to the Centre seeking to declare the rainfall in the four districts as a ‘calamity of severe nature’ under the National Disaster Management Plan, and release Rs 2,000 crore relief amount.
